Our approach

Stuttering is not a problem to be solved. It is a way some people speak.

Calm Speech exists to make that easier to live with — not to erase it. Everything in the product follows from that one sentence: no fluency scores, no cure language, and no programme you’re expected to finish.

01 — MEASUREMENT

Why we don’t measure fluency

A fluency score turns speaking into a test you can fail. Fail it a few times and the sensible response is to speak less: fewer calls, shorter answers, more substitution. Anxiety goes up, shame gets reinforced, and the app that was supposed to help becomes one more place you’re being marked.

So Calm Speech measures effort instead — showing up, practising, reflecting. Effort is the part you control. It holds up on a good day and a bad one, and it’s the part that actually predicts whether you keep going.

WE NEVER RECORD

Fluency percentages, syllable counts, disfluency rates, streak-breaking penalties.

WE DO RECORD

Days you showed up, sessions you chose, moments you reflected on.

02 — LANGUAGE

Why we don’t say “cure”

There is no cure for stuttering. It has a neurological basis, it is not a habit picked up in childhood, and it is not a defect waiting to be corrected. Any product promising otherwise is selling something it cannot deliver.

Being honest about that isn’t pessimism. Fluency can vary, techniques can genuinely help in specific moments, and plenty changes over a life. What doesn’t help is treating every block as evidence of failure. We move the goal from elimination to confidence: a life you don’t have to speak around.

03 — AUTHORSHIP

Built with the community

Calm Speech is shaped by people who stutter and stammer. We test with the community, we take lived experience as evidence in its own right, and we don’t treat clinical authority as the only voice in the room.

That includes the vocabulary. The app never corrects “stammer” to “stutter”, never assumes you’re seeking treatment, and never congratulates you for sounding more fluent.
